1849 Mormon $5 Gold Coin – NGC AU55 – Rare Pioneer Territorial Gold
150 known in private hands!!
Offered here is a rare and highly desirable 1849 Mormon $5 Gold Coin, certified AU55 by NGC. This historic piece was minted in Salt Lake City by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints using gold brought back from the California Gold Rush. These coins are a cornerstone of early American territorial coinage and represent a unique chapter in U.S. monetary and religious history.
The obverse features the all-seeing “Eye of Jehovah” above a Phrygian cap, surrounded by the inscription “HOLINESS TO THE LORD.” The reverse depicts a crossed scepter and crown motif with the date and denomination.
This particular coin has strong detail, minimal wear, and excellent eye appeal for the grade. Only a limited number of these coins were ever struck, and far fewer have survived in collectible condition — especially in higher circulated grades like AU55.
Whether you’re a collector of early gold, Mormon history, or U.S. territorial coinage, this coin is a standout example worthy of any serious collection.
